We love to go to the beach and walk in the sand! When you can't be there... here's the next best thing!
What you need:
sand
plaster of paris
water
a plastic mixing bowl
paint stick or something to stir with
a shallow cardboard box or shoe box
plastic bags to line the box
Line the box with the plastic bag. Add play sand to about 5" deep. Add some water so that the sand is of the consistency that you could mold somethng out of it (like if you were building a sand castle!..not too wet though!)
It's helpful to have an assistant at this point.
Have the child remove shoes and socks if necessary.
Mix up the plaster of paris until it is just slightly thicker than cake batter.
In order to get a nice clear imprint, have the child step STRAIGHT DOWN into the sand and have someone support them so that they can place their whole weight into the print. Have them push their heel and toes down but don't wiggle!! You may have to push lightly down to get a good shape.
When you are satisfied (the foot should be in about 1/2 inch or so) have the child lift his foot STRAIGHT UP tryng not to disturb the print!
Pour the plaster of paris (that hopefully someone has been stirring this whole time! You may need to add a little more water!) into the impression just to fill the depression.
Let it dry undisturbed. Sometimes this can take several days depending on the humidity.
You will have a keepsake of your kiddoes footprint for years to come!!
